What is a Cord? How much is a Half Cord?
A cord of firewood is measured as a neatly stacked pile of wood totaling 128 cubic feet, with standard dimensions of 4 feet high × 4 feet deep × 8 feet long. This measurement is based on the volume of the stacked wood, including the air space between pieces, and is the industry standard for selling firewood. Measuring by the cord ensures consistency, transparency, and fairness so customers know exactly how much firewood they are receiving.
A half cord of firewood is equal to 64 cubic feet, or exactly half the volume of a full cord. When properly stacked, it typically measures 4 feet high × 4 feet deep × 4 feet long. A half cord is commonly considered the equivalent of a long-box pickup load of firewood when stacked, making it a practical option for customers who want a substantial amount of wood without committing to a full cord.
We measure our firewood using a predetermined bucket size that holds approximately half a cord when properly filled. For a full cord order, we deliver 2.5 bucket loads, ensuring you receive a full cord plus a little extra to account for natural air spaces or gaps that can occur when loading. This method allows us to be consistent and accurate with every order.
Our goal is to remove any uncertainty from the process. The last thing we want is for a customer to ever feel shorted, which is why we build in this margin to ensure you receive the volume you’re paying for—every time.
We know we can safely carry two full cords of firewood based on the measured volume of the trailer we use. The trailer dimensions are 4.167 ft × 6.75 ft × 14 ft, which equals approximately 393.7 cubic feet of total capacity.
To be conservative and account for air gaps, irregular stacking, and real-world loading conditions, we subtract 33% from that volume. This leaves us with roughly 263.8 cubic feet of usable space. Since two full cords equal 256 cubic feet, this still provides an extra 7.8 cubic feet beyond the required volume.
In addition, we intentionally hump the load in the center of the trailer, allowing extra buffer space for volume, a guarantee that customers receive a true two-cord volume without being shorted.
How does each type of wood Burn? Which Species should I choose?
Each firewood species offers its own unique benefits, from burn time and heat output to aroma and ease of ignition. By understanding the characteristics of different woods, you can choose the option that best suits your needs—whether it’s long-lasting heat, quick starts, or a specific burning experience. We take care to source and prepare each species properly to ensure reliable performance and consistent quality
Spruce/Pine
Spruce and Pine are softwood species known for their quick ignition and bright, lively flames. When properly seasoned, they burn hot and evenly, making them a commonly preferred choice for home heating due to their ability to deliver consistent, reliable heat. On average, Spruce and Pine generate approximately 15–17 million BTUs per cord, providing efficient heat output while remaining easy to manage.
When burning, Spruce and Pine release a clean, crisp, forest-like aroma that many people associate with fresh wood and outdoor fires. Another key advantage of these species is their attractive price point compared to denser options such as Tamarack and Birch, making them a practical and cost-effective choice for households that rely on firewood throughout the winter heating season. Their lighter density also makes them easier to handle and stack, and they pair well with hardwoods to balance quick heat with longer burn times.
Tamarack
Tamarack is the only deciduous conifer—a softwood that sheds its needles each fall—while still delivering strong, long-lasting heat from its dense timber. This unique combination makes Tamarack an excellent substitute for Birch, in home-heating applications. When properly seasoned, it burns steadily and efficiently, producing a solid bed of coals and consistent heat output that performs especially well during colder conditions. On average, Tamarack produces approximately 20–22 million BTUs per cord, placing it among the higher-heat firewood options.
Tamarack also produces a pleasant, natural, slightly sweet, wood aroma while burning, providing a pleasant atmosphere. Because it is resinous by nature, it does not burn as cleanly as Birch in terms of creosote production; however, when fully seasoned and burned correctly, there is nothing out of the ordinary to be concerned about. With proper airflow and routine chimney maintenance, Tamarack remains a reliable and effective heating wood. Its balance of durability, heat performance, aroma, and value makes it an excellent choice for customers seeking dependable, long-lasting warmth without the premium price of Birch.
In addition, Tamarack can be easily identified by its golden to orange-toned heartwood, noticeably dense and heavy feel, and distinctive purple, flaky bark. These characteristics set it apart from lighter softwoods like Spruce and Pine, making it recognizable even once split and seasoned. Its dense structure is a clear indicator of the long, steady burn Tamarack is known for.
Birch
Birch is a dense hardwood known for its excellent heat output, clean burn, and pleasant, distinctive aroma. When properly seasoned, Birch burns hot and evenly, producing a long-lasting fire with a strong bed of coals and steady, consistent heat. On average, Birch generates approximately 22–24 million BTUs per cord, making it one of the most efficient and effective firewood options for home heating.
One of Birch’s standout qualities is how cleanly it burns compared to other high-heat species, producing less creosote buildup when seasoned and burned correctly. Its naturally appealing aroma adds to the overall fire experience, whether used indoors or outdoors. With its combination of heat performance, cleanliness, and scent, Birch remains a premium choice for those seeking maximum efficiency and a refined burning experience.
